OVID Linksolver
Ovid LinkSolver

Ovid LinkSolverTM is a part of the OVID administrative package of resources offered to e-HLbc’s member libraries. It is a resource linking solution that can give you complete administrative flexibility in defining, organizing and displaying links for your end-users. For more information see http://www.linksolver.com/site/index.jsp

This service also includes an A to Z full-text title list generator. This list will help your end users navigate to full-text by browsing title by title or by subject. Currently all of the full-text titles from the databases listed above including open access collections such as PubMed Central and DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals are included. See e-HLbc’s test example http://gateway.tx.ovid.com/atoz/az/index?idtok=-1060706634

If you are interested in this additional feature contact the e-HLbc Administration Centre.

EBSCO’s CustomLinks

Ebsco also offers a “CustomLinks” feature. According to EBSCO, the CustomLinks(TM) feature works by allowing links to be calculated using a customer-controlled URL template. Members can create CustomLinks to their linksolver, their own library catalog, interlibrary loan forms, Serial Solutions, document delivery service, or A to Z title list. The custom links also include a number of set profiles to licensed content as well as free open access sites such as PubMed Central, Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), and other free medical open access journals collections. EBSCO maintains these profiles, which aids tremendously in a member’s maintenance commitments. Quite of few of the consortium members employ this feature to provide access to journal content including a direct link to e-HLbc’s Ovid content.

Accessing Databases & E-Journals

There are several ways to access the e-HLbc databases:

OVID offers authentication by:

  • IP authentication from your network.
  • Referring URL from your library’s website.
  • Remote access through the vendors’ gateway using an ID and password.

EBSCO offers authentication by:

  • User ID and Password : allows users to access EBSCOhost remotely.
  • IP Address: grants access to recognized computer or site IP addresses.
  • Patron ID Files: facilitates the use of library or patron card numbers (up to 20 characters) to control access to EBSCOhost.
  • Customer Patterned ID (CPID): provides library bar code number access to EBSCOhost.
  • Referring URL: provides access to EBSCOhost from a secure home page on a library’s web server. Users are identified by originating URL (the page from which they came), which eliminates the need for User IDs/Passwords.
  • Athens: is available for European customers with academic reference systems. Users are prompted for an Athens user name and password.
  • Cookies: enables EBSCOhost to write a cookie to a user’s local drive for automatic access to EBSCOhost, for up to thirty days between logins.
  • Shibboleth: available for Shibboleth members to automatically authenticate to EBSCOhost.

IP Authenticated Access

Most e-HLbc member institutions have set up access to the databases through IP authentication. This method of access does not require a user ID and password. The links for this section will will take you straight to the databases if you are on an IP identified/authenticated site.

Referring URLs

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC, the BC Ministry of Health, Physiotherapy Association of BC, and the BC Ministry of Children and Family Development have set up access for their members via referring urls from their Library websites.

Referring URL Authentication is a method that offers to set up an authenticated link to EBSCOhost/OVID Gateway from a secure and/or password-protected web page. When a user clicks on the resource URL, the referring URL uses a standard HTTP Referrer command to check the URL of the page that contained the link to vendor resource. If that URL is registered in vendor resource administration module, the user will be granted access. The base EBSCOhost URL for this authentication scheme is http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?authtype=url

There are times where the referring URL is not passed, due to privacy or design of the web page. Known examples of this include:

  • URLs beginning with https://
  • Some firewall software including Norton Personal Firewall
  • Scripts that use HTTP redirect
  • Links that use JavaScript to open a new window

Remote Access (user ID and password required)

User IDs and passwords for remote access may be obtained from your institution’s library services.
